This is one of the most eclectic trip hop / instrumental hip-hop albums I've ever known. Coming from the French city of Aix-en-Provence, near Marseille (with the latter being the hometown of hip-hop group IAM that made the soundtrack of the 1998 "Taxi" movie), Chinese Man fully showcased their Asian roots there. Their sound is somewhat reminiscent of the ones from acts like Asian Dub Foundation ("Eight Y Cinco" & "Indi Groove") or Torpedo Boyz ("Bunni Groove").
"Searching For The Space Monkey" which samples dialogues from the "Fight Club" movie is a masterpiece, my favorite off this CD by far.
You also find other kinds of atmospheres like the brothel background of "You Suck Me", the early 20th century cabaret sound of "I've Got That Tune" or the Jackie Chan combat soundtrack with "More".
There's no filler in this first "Groove Sessions" volume, so you can go on it with confidence. If you want to dig deeper in this scene, French artists like Birdy Nam Nam and Le Peuple de l'Herbe are also worth a listen.
