Art Farmer! Hank Mobley!! Who would have credited such a combination? Lyrical trumpet and malted tenor.Typically Horace, this is a perfectly balanced set of varied moods and tempo’s, graced with exquisite solo and collaborative performances. Though his mid ’60s work earned Horace the most acclaim, it’s his earlier work from the golden age of bop that is the most substantial. It’s Mobley. It’s Blue Note 1500 series. It’s cordon blue bop, inventive, lyrical, energetic, and substantial.
It may or may not be Silver’s best album, but the best is the enemy of the good, the merely enjoyable can become overlooked.
the sound quality of this pressing is excellent ! -

I wouldn't have believed this was possible, but then I got one of these myself. About all I can think of is that this was mis-labeled all the way back to before the stampers were being made?
-
My copy had a lot of surface noise, especially on Side A. To be fair, it came out of one of those cheap paper inner sleeves, so there was still a lot of static on the record after I used the carbon fiber and velvet brush before playing it.
Album is flat and sounds great, but the bass is recorded very hot and sounds distorted at a higher volume. Had to adjust my amp bass volume from 12 o’clock down to 9 just to eliminate the hum. This will be my temporary copy until I find a better early pressing or when Blue Note reissues it as a Classic Series or Tone Poet. -
The copy i have is DEFINITELY STEREO, trumpet and drum kit on the right, sax on the left, piano in centre, bass centre.
-
First off this is 100% a stereo cut. You can hear the soundfile samples on Juno for proof. Or come to mine lol.
Its MPCS but clearly a source of unknown origin. That may bother some but for 20 quid i got a quiet well pressed LP (blimey MPO got one right!?!?) and one that sounds really decent too. Nice clarity, everything has good transient attack, the tonality is decent and the imaging is good. It could be a BNC reissue for what it offers. A full tone poet would be good of course. Highly recommened but minus a point for the shiddy plain paper inner. -
Another fine example of the Music Matters 45 series. Maybe or not Horace Silver‘s best release inclusive of legendary co-musicians. Great mastering by Messrs. Gray and Hoffman. Flat and quiet 180g pressing by RTI. Plays well with both stereo and mono cartridges.
-
… love the sound of these Classic Records all analog mono series. So it is with this one. Gets one closer to the original. Super Vinyl Flat Profile Pressing by RTI is top notch. Highly recommended!

Heh. The first track No Smokin' - This track really smokes. Burns, actually.
I would have enjoyed sitting in a jazz club and listening to this combo. This session sounds like these players have gigged together and not just something put together for this session. That is not the case, so far as I can tell, but great interaction all around. There is great variety in the tunes put together on this album. Horace Sliver sometimes gets put in a box based on his well-known tunes. This album is definitely outside that box. The variety is interesting and makes for satisfying listening.

No idea who remastered this particular reissue, but I can't deny it: the sound quality of this pressing is magnificent. Granted, the placement of the cat.numbers and the ugly "stereo" logo at the top of the front cover are a pain, but that's all irrelevant; the music is what it's all about. On the known forums, you here and there read that the bass is 'too present' on this reissue, but I think it's beautiful. Tight, punchy, deep and not as rolled off as on the previously released versions. In more modern lingo: this reissue sounds fat. I'm glad that I bought it, it's killer on the turntable.
