Official Release #17 (50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition: Official Release #127)
Initial UK vinyl issues used the distinct UK red DiscReet logo sleeve, with Euro-pressed & labeled disc. UK labeled pressings then quickly followed, with some sleeves over-stickered with artist's name.
"MS" prefixed run-out pressings, of US origin, have a noticeable audio difference to "K" prefixed pressings (UK & Euro) which, in comparison, have the left/right channels swapped.
There is also a significant print difference on center spread of gatefolds. One version simply has 'sepia' & black print, the other has a solid brown/yellow color to the background areas. The two-headed character on the cover is Herb Cohen.

Sounds fabulous? Absolutely not!
The 50th is, in my opinion, absolutely nothing like the other Zappa reissues that I know from CB. Disappointing.
Not enough resolution in the high frequency range. As if there was a curtain in front of the speakers. No comparison to the Canadian first pressing.
But maybe we have something wrong with our ears (four of us did a listening comparison). -
Absolutely fantastic sounding pressing!
Significantly better than the '77 American reissue or German reissues from the 1970s.
The 50th Edition (2023 - 45rpm x2) is a disaster, on the other hand. Shrouded in fog, no resolution in the high frequency range -

So Chris Bellman cut the 33 as well which does sound amazing. The 45 surprisingly pops out and performs even better. the separate instruments in the mix are more noticeable and the pressing itself is fairly amazing. I don't think this could sound any better. You play it loud and it really knocks you out. -
Edited 7 months agoThe balance on this pressing is really off. Vocals and drums are too loud, to the point of being distorted at times. Backing vocals are way too soft. The horns and keyboard percussion parts mostly get swallowed up. Very strange. -
Universal have finally released a replacement (corrected) version of Disc 2. Runout numbers are: "5822155 www.zappa.com AO17345-01 manufactured by optimal media GmbH"

Got that, but i was surprised that it was in a clamshell box. Thought the discs would be housed on a big LP-sized box like 200 Motels.
Apart from the expensive price, it's a great box. They should sell that for $50 for the CD version though. -
This UK pressing sounds muted and distant compared to a US (Santa Maria) copy that I have.
