A very fine session full of soul led by Stanley Turrentine. This Japanese pressing sounds fantastic, as with the other album from the same Blue Note 4000 Series Ultra Collection. Sound stage is broad with great separation and plenty of details. A very enjoyable listen.

Edited one year agoGreat stuff! I own around 50 Tone Poets, this one is very good, sonically and the music selection is excellent.
Luckily I didn’t have any issues in any tracks, vinyl is also flat.
The piano sound is not as soft as the “usual” RVG recordings, but not great. It’s not at the same level of Chick Corea TP.
Agree with GalaxyExplorer that this suits better a late night listening, a good glass of Tawny Port wine would be a perfect pairing. -
Edited 2 years agoAnother great Tone Poet pressing. I only hear surface noise during the extremely quiet sections, and even then, it's like light little clicks. The volume is lower than normal because the music is lower in volume. So, you'll have to turn this up a little more than normal to achieve the listening levels you are used to.
The music comes out of the speakers in a nice, warm fashion. There is detail to everything, don't get me wrong, but there's also no question this is an all analogue album.
In the left speaker we get Mr. Turrentine, and his sax sounds beautiful - like those ones that have that "burnished" quality to them. The durms come out of the right speaker, and the drum smacks have good authority with full cymbal decay. The piano is the typical van Gelder soft piano. The bass is very plump somewhere in the right side of the listening space.
Overall excellent.

I have several of these DMM Ron McMaster pressings and they all sound great including this Turrentine release, flat, clean, wax is dead silent and the music is dynamic, highly recommend

Edited 2 years agoSpinning this for the first time in quite a while. It's a cold sunny day which doesn't really suit the music - like most Turrentine albums, this one seems more aimed at late-night listening. But in any event, it's pretty good (excepting track B1 which isn't my favorite). Side 1 is the best. Also, KG nailed the sound on this record. One of the best sounding TPs!

After a few months and several auditions, I can really say that this release is fantastic, sonically and musically. Amazing.
I only wish Blue Hour with the Three Sounds would be reissued as well. -

Such a warm and lush sounding record, excellent job done with the mastering.
Three noticeable pops at the very end of B1 as that track winds down but apart from that this is a very good pressing.
Really dynamic and vivid sounding record with a nice wide soundstage. I own most of the Tone Poets and this is in the top tier as far as mastering and sound quality is concerned. -
This series (cadre rouge) have very nice sound, clean, very low surface noise. Vinyl thickness is average (not an issue from my perspective). Labels show mono but cover shows stereo, and it is definitely a stereo mix. Recommended. Inner sleeve has blue note story on it.

Stanley at his superb best again with Soft Pedal Blues the standout McCann on piano sublime, ed by Lewis on Bass & the illusive Finch on Drums...this album has made it into my top ten TPs released as far as June 2021.
