The Rolling Stones – Still Life (American Concert 1981)

For a picture disc this record sounds awesome. An overlooked album imo this is a really good live album compiled from the 81 US tour. A very easy album to listen to it flows very well.

The very first album I ever bought as a kid. Still have it to this day.

Thanks for showing this. I came across this years ago once like 25 years ago and never saw it again. I would wonder from time to time if my mind had played tricks with my memory, but here it is!!

I have a "Promotional Use Only" with gold lettering stamped on the cover and its numbered. Cant find another online anywhere. Looks normal otherwise.

American Concert 1981 is like Live magic by Queen, a single LP/CD live "Highlights" that you don't really need! This should have been a double, just like the Queen LP, and they're both redundant now because of updated releases from the archives from the period.

Still Life (from the1981 american tour), edited for the european leg of the rolling stones tour in 1982, is one of the large big live choice you can have by the stones. It stays one of my best and fave. The intro and first song is great (in Italy this version of the Ellington song, with the audience that roars was also used in Tv as opening for music programs on RAI1), it's a tipical choice and summary of a live set of a stones concert of that tour .The first side is great, maybe better than second one.
Under My Thumb for those of my generation is the version much loved, Let's spend the night is wonderful, the band plays fast. Shattered is still the best version you can hear by the band as live version (fast - and furious!) and different from the studio one from Some girls - 1978). "20Flight rock and Going to AGo-Go" are representing the roots of the stones as usual cut between rock'n'roll - flight rock is an original Eddie Cochran song, and the sound of young America that's RnB, by Smokie Robinson). these versions are great , 20 Flight is short and strong, and the drumming of Charlie introduces Go-go in a powerful way, the guitars riffs their "apice" waiting for t Mick's performance (that's great, even though in this tour he used to run around the stage as crazy!) . The second side of Lp, starts with Let me go (from 1980 studio LP) and time is on my side, the famous slow tune from the early stones, much loved by fans. The pearl of second side is Just My Imagination, that's a another declaration of love to RNB (Eddie Kendricks Temptations falsetto version is one of my fave still after so many years) and that's a sort of summary of what the stones are, were and will be .. rock and strong Rnb band. The song is my fave (with shattered) of the whole album.
Of course they end with start me up (not great rendition, in my opinion, in this tour) and satisfaction : what's one of the secrets of the stones, they study tracks, they forget tracks and then they play them live, so you are always on the balance. The best live stuff of ever, since 1962 :)

I’m giving this a Five star rating which is very rare for me with live albums. It’s because I was at both of the shows that wrapped up Their 1981 North American Tour in a two night show close to my Hometown of Norfolk, Va. This was recorded at the infamous Hampton Coliseum, in Hampton Virginia, a favorite venue for The Grateful Dead as well as Phish, which I’ve seen many times their as well!

What’s really interesting about this recording is that it’s the world's first pay-per-view live broadcast of a rock show. It was my only Rolling Stones concert I ever got to see and it was incredible.
