Edited 3 months agoAlmost 5 hours of completely "out" playing... extended performances, extended soloing, astonishing late live Coltrane. Amazing to think of being present there in Japan during these concerts. OK mono radio broadcast quality, not the finest instrumental balances. Not for everyone... but if you are interested even remotely in hour long marathon performances of "my favorite things" et al, then, yeah, you need to get this. I ended up paying a good deal higher than the median value here on discogs, but no regrets. The story behind the tour included in the booklet, and other anecdotal reports of Coltrane in Japan, make this a vital document of an important period of one of America's greatest musicians.
Having recently come across articles describing the "CD Revival", this release is exactly what gives the CD format an edge over vinyl: long uninterrupted takes, always an advantage for those of us that like classical music as well. This went out of print fairly soon, and was a pretty tough CD to find until discogs, I think I got my copy on eBay originally, and even then I took a while to come across a copy. There's also a later Japanese release that features an extra disc of interviews. Good luck on snagging a copy of that one... -
A lot of people have mixed feelings about this album, or just flat out dislike it, but I think it’s one of the most beautiful of the live sets, post-classic quartet. “Peace on Earth” (July 22nd concert) is especially amazing. It’s an essential CD set to pick up if you have a fondness for John Coltrane’s later free jazz stage. The recording is in mono, but it sounds like a good digital transfer.
