Classic Buddy Holly. 'That'll Be the Day' is fine here, although I prefer the rawer version presented on 'The Great Buddy Holly' album on Vocalion. Both songs are exciting in a way that Holly's later stuff isn't. There's something vaguely sexual going on here. 'That'll Be the Day' finds Buddy as the crowing rooster, the cocksman supreme, if you will. "I'm Lookin' For Someone to Love' enters the realm of lust. "If you're not here, well baby I don't care cuz I'm lookin' for someone to love". Buddy had a pleasant persona that sold millions of records, but these songs, along with his great "Midnight Shift", lack any notion of innocence.
