Experiment, art project, career retrospective, it's all here. While this set does not physically include "Ricks Drift Experience" it was included as part of the package included with this set in reality, the additional material provided as a is as much music as included on the discs here, (about 8-9 CD's worth of additional material) outtakes, live takes, jams, live session mixes, seriously, I've probably spent more time with the additional ed material included. -

It was fun to arrive to many Fridays on 2018 and 2019 and find that Spotify pointed you to yet another new Underworld release, and that this Underworld release was never bad. There was one. Then another. Then another. Then another. What was happening?
It's just that Underworld seem to have the time of their lives in the Drift series, doing some kind of equivalent to those long EPs they have released (where many of their best tunes are) with variations over the same riff, tune, sample, but with no limitations on the length or style. Well, the style is the same one they have been championing for decades now, a mix of pop, progressive house/trance, techno, stadium attitude, The Fall kind of rambling in the lyrics (though I always loved Karl Hyde as a kinetic poet), some ambient, all as arty as inmediate. It is just an overwhelming flow of fantastic tunes even when at this time I was thinking if Underworld are not a bit like the AOR equivalent of dance music as they have not changed that much.
They are not. They are their thing. Rick Smith has barely changed his way of arranging stuff and the dialogue between him and Hyde is even more natural than the one in Barbara Barbara. They take an idea and quickly run with it wherever it goes, taking their acid lines, dubby percussion and delivery rolling for minutes. There are so many highlights here that it may play against the full work; it really demands you to pay attention to each of its parts carefully, to analyse how the different versions of Appleshine or Another Silent Way develop (we did it with Dark and Long or Pearl's Girl already, right?) . And even though I cannot help highlighting their collaborations: the ones with Ø [Phase] are proper techno tracks (Border Country is specially amazing on their live shows) and the ones with the Necks, where jazz and almost progressive rock leanings match so well the originals. Really, amazing, expansive, incredible work. -
Edited 5 years agoWhat is this ? Hi-res files for the additional audio but not for the actual tracks of the box set ? Not even on the blu-ray ? All in CD quality. I really don't get it.
That's no big deal as I imagine, being mastered by Miles Showell, it already sounds great in CD quality. But if you really are into 24bit quality, the blu-ray included in this box set could at least offer this quality as it is within its capability (it's only 16bit 48kHz). -
