Edited 4 months agoclassic album. this pressing sounds so good, and it’s original in all its glory. no censorship nonsense. how do we learn from our mistakes if we erase history?

Je viens de le recevoir ! Superbe pressage original. Avec en prime forcément le "fameux" titre non censuré sur les récentes rééditions....

Edited 3 years agoI first heard Bad Brains on Mtv. They played the video for "Soulcraft". You know, for like 10 years, maybe from its launch until the mid to late 90s, Mtv, and to a lesser degree VH1, was an enormous source of culture and entertainment for me. I can't even estimate how much of an impact it had on my teenage consciousness. What the hell happened? I haven't heard about or seen Mtv for over maybe 20 years. What happened? How did they so completely lose relevance?
Anyway, I had no freaking idea what to think of these Bad Brains guys. They were not at all what I was used to seeing when it came to Metal. I just new I loved THE HELL out of that riff in "Soulcraft". And even though H.R.'s vocals sound not unlike an unhinged homeless person being force fed banana pudding, there was something about his singing that was incredibly catchy.
I listened to this record (cassette at the time) all the time and very quickly (with the quickness) got to the point where I absolutely loved every single song. I had at the time (and still to this day) have never heard or seen anything like Bad Brains. Maybe Fishbone at their most aggro.
But here I am listening to the LP right now 30 years later and I still love THE HELL out if it. Dr. Know's tone! Listen to his work on "With the Quickness"...even when he goes into the solo, you don't get that drop in fullness with the loss of the guitar, his solo tone is so thick. Every song is just so good. Again, listen to Dr. Know on "Gene Machine". That tone is legendary.
The production is very simple, but it's perfect. Everything resolves together but is separate. There's no muddiness at all. I don't know who Ron St. Germain is, but he's clearly a genius.
Don't Blow Bubbles got a bit of heat for being anti gay. Too bad about that. I guess great artists can also be a little mean.
After this album H.R. left and I lost interest in following them. But I've still always wanted to look into their earlier records. Looks like an addition to the Want List is in order.
