i have an original 1997 Dedicated 2LP pressing of this and i also have this Fat Possum neptune blue pressing. I love the original artwork, but also love the re-imagined artwork although the massively thick gatefold sleeve is annoying as hell since it rips any outer sleeve i try to put on it because it's so fat!!!
Finally got around to sitting down and comparing the original 1997 Dedicated pressing to this Fat Possum pressing.
This Fat Possum reissue increases the mids and the highs on all the songs, which makes it sound louder than the original pressing. I don't think it's really much louder but the highs are significantly louder. it's not a bad sounding record at all, and in fact i like the sound because it makes it a bit more raw----BUT it does add a harshness that the original 1997 pressing doesn't have. Some of the songs and sounds on this album can get VERY layered, and in that layering the Fat Possum reissue can sometimes get overwhelmed due to the emphasis on the highs and higher edge of the mids. The original 1997 pressing focuses on the mids, lower end of mids, and the lows. So the bass on the original is more defined and heavy.
So yeah predictably i prefer the 1997 Dedicated pressing----it's just so well balanced and beautiful. BUT it also costs $200 or more now, and this Fat Possum reissue is easily available for $20-40. The Neptune Blue vinyl is beautiful----like really beautiful! I have NOT heard the VMP Reissue so i can't comment on that---but at this point i'm not buying a 3rd copy am happy with these 2 variants of this great record. I'd say this Fat Possum reissue is overall a really good copy of this classic record, and if you've never heard the original pressing, you can enjoy this knowing you have a pretty solid copy of this record!

Not understanding why almost everyone has a problem with this pressing, my near-mint used copy I picked up last week sounds fantastic
-
Edited 2 years agocoloured vinyl mania is completely out of control: noisy, hissy sound quality for x-tra expensive pressings for those who care more about bling-bling than sound quality... played this record now like 5 times since purchase and the sound quality (especially of the tracks at the end of each sides) got soooo bad, so crackly, distorted, kind of unlistenable ...

Edited 2 years agoFound a used, near-mint, Neptune blue copy today and am as happy as can be. Quiet, great sound and, yes, the very tail end of Side D plays static, but it is, quite literally, the very tail end; maybe about the last minute's worth...and that's out of a sixteen minute track. At this point in the track, if listening at home or playing for friends, I'm fading out a ways before this glitch anyway, so it really doesn't affect my overall listening experience.
-
I bought this used and it has the defect on side D. I assume it’s not under warranty if I buy it secondhand. Besides the one issue it’s a phenomenal pressing.

Overall not satisfied with the package - The ablum barely fits in my plastic sleeves, inner sleeves too hard to take out / put back in. My version also has the flaw on end of side D. And all of this after waiting several months for the record to be finally delivered to my local store (in Norway).
-
Cop Shoot Cop sounds amazing compared to my orginal CD. But I do have issues with this pressing which as a some weird flaw on Side Two en lotsa pops.
-
UPDATE: I too was experiencing the flaw at the end of Side D. I wrote to Fat Possum about it and they sent out a replacement disc immediately. We're talking FAST - I had it four days later. The flaw is completely absent and side D plays perfectly.
-
Blue Vinyl has a horrible flaw in the last minute of side D that makes it unlistenable.
Black vinyl has the same issue on side B.
Quality control at Fat Possum must be non-existent.
