Notes

Los Angeles pressing are denoted by an asterisk (*) in each runout
#5 appears at lower right hand corner of the rear sleeve
Released on a black Capitol label with rainbow rim.

The mono and stereo labels on the "Butcher" LPs pressed in Los Angeles are similar to the Scranton pressing labels -- The Beatles - Yesterday And Today -- but differ in two respects: 1) On the Los Angeles labels, the “ST-2553” is right aligned above the “(ST-X-1-2553)” (to the left of "Side 1/2"); and 2) "Side 1/2" is in a serif font. On Scranton pressings, the “ST-2553” is centered over the “(ST-X-1-2553)” and the side number is in a sans serif font.

I just scored a copy of this in great condition for only $30 in a used book store. Not something I was looking for but when you seen something like this you grab it and ask questions later.

How is the median price $22? Something's wrong there.

Can anyone confirm what the numbers etched on eachside of the album are for this? I have an album minus the cover with ST-2553. In very good condition. The numbers etched are ST1 2553 A5 and ST2 2553 A5.

        Thanks!

            From notes:

Underneath the regular 'trunk' cover was the so-called 'baby butcher' cover of this release which induced such an outrage that the album was recalled and new artwork was created from an earlier Beatles photoshoot. A small number of copies escaped and appeared on the market nonetheless. These are known as ''first state'' butcher covers. Not wanting to lose time with waiting until the new covers were ready, Capitol decided to first use the new front slicks and glue them over the original artwork, to hide its offensive picture from the public eye. The (not too many) copies of this that came unto the market are known as ''second state'' butcher covers. These are discernible by checking the cover in the middle on the right hand side. If the ''butcher'' artwork is underneath, a dark triangle (of Ringo's turtleneck) shines through. If the pasted slick is removed, as on this copy, and the original artwork thus restored the release is known as a ''third state'' butcher cover.
