Edited 16 days agoCOMPARISON TIME:
2011 Analogue Productions 2x45rpm
VS
2022 Acoustic Sounds 33rpm
At the risk of sounding like a broken record (ahem), i find myself repeating the words that there is a significant advantage to be had by choosing the 45rpm over the 33rpm. Even from the very start of the sides (where you can literally see the grooves are almost twice as wide) the 45 just has a LIFE and DYNAMISM thats frankly breathtaking and the 33 sadly cannot match. Side by side and A/B'ing, the 45 has significantly better bass and treble extensions. The lowest octaves just have more presence and the top end is not only more extended but it doesnt come at any expense (no harshness or grain, in fact its cleaner if anything). This renders everything on the record with more transient impact and longer decays. This creates space and air and textures. This creates LIFE.
Ive had some AP45s where the difference vs the 33 is barelyworth the bother (Dr Johns Gumbo!) but it takes ten seconds at the start of each records sides to hear the 45's across the board improvements. By the time the latter half side tracks of the AS33 are in play the AP45 is so far ahead its like going from a £1000 system to a £10k system.
Where things get abit awkward though, the 2011 Analogue Productions packaging quality is not very (single sleeve sadness) vs 2024 AS glossy tip on loveliness and on first plays the newer QRP compounds are quieter even when both are Degritter cleaned and this also despite the 33 having to give up a db or two.
To conclude.... the AP45 is 11/10 for sound (it really is) and the AS33 is a 9/10 but the AP is a 7/10 for packaging and the AS is 10/10. Theres is also a significant price difference to bare in mind. The 33 is arguably the better deal. It still sounds great! The problem ive given myself is buying and listening to the 45 against it.
I almost recommend you dont do this lol. Almost. -
Edited one month agoI have many old original Analogue pressings and some later 'digitized' versions of this album (that are not worth listening to, imho) The old ones are as of jet, the best choice, more depth, wider soundstage and clearness. Until I stumbled across this new version...AS did a tremendous job here. They squeezed all the juice out of the old original tapes and made it into a stunning listening experience. It kept me in my seat, speechless...My disc is flawless, flat, with absolutely no 'tick/pop/noizzze' in the music. Clean, clear, wide soundstage, very good contra-bass reproduction (you can feel it!) and lifelike piano! Cover is a beautiful glossy tip-on gate fold, but a bit tight to put those flimsy covers back in. Apart from that, what can I say....the best pressing that I have heard until now, worth the small investment. :-)

My vinyl copy is warped but still sounds perfect, no pops or clicks. The sound quality is superb, and there is no background noise, not even between tracks.

Bought brand new sealed from Amazon. Like my other experiences with AS, the jacket and sleeve are both from excellent quality, but the record is warped quite a bit and the spin hole is too tight… My copy is not very well centered too. Some small tics here and there, most noticeable on A3 and A5, but not too bad. Other than that, it has a stunning “in the room” presence, insane details and very good separation… 4.85 / 5

If you dig this check out 'exclusively for my friends' box set. Also pristine sq and fascinating history spanning years of private sessions.

Edited one year agoQuite expensive, but totally worth it. The sound is remarkable - as deep as it can be and well balanced. Sonics are super detailed and clean, contrabass is right here. Totally beats the Qobuz version (or I have to upgrade my digital setup :) )
Thick gatefold cardboard, safe antistatic inner sleeve. Absolutely silent surface. The spindle hole is a little bit small. -
Mostly quiet pressing. The extremely blurry photo on the cover reminds me of VMP's terrible artwork. Inside the gatefold, you get two more photos: one is just as blurry as the cover art, but the other is a wonderful color photo of Oscar Peterson that seems to capture something of the man's personality. But let's cut to what's really important: the music and the recorded sound. Both are extraordinarily beautiful. I can only echo what others say about the realism of the sound. All the various knocks and clicks and bips and bams from the percussion are a delight to the ear in their seemingly endless variety. I like this record even more than "Night Train"!

Edited one year agoSimply amazing. For me, this is preferable to my AP 45rpm, because of convenience, and a slightly cleaner, more taut take than the sumptuous 45. If you close your eyes, you *will* see the trio in your apt.
