A pretty weird album, eclectic even within the band's sprawling universe. When it came out I was a little blind to it, perhaps due to the cover - both monochrome and inscrutable, two things the band doesn't usually do with the art. I had the CD then, but I bought the LP now; and while the music has grabbed me a lot more, the packaging for the vinyl doesn't offer more than the cardboard CD.
This version of Hauptbanhof (20:10) really aged well. I can feel the return to vintage oddball synth sounds way more than at first listen in 2010, when I thought it was just a slow piano rendition. Maybe the vinyl master helps with that.
This almost feels like another It's Raining in Heaven, like a collection of obscure-feeling Ka-Spel/Silverman/Dots material, though it is downright cool that they got back to hard synthing for this album. That sense that we are returning to the cassette tape roots is very strong here, making the songs worth listening when you are within your deep space orientation.
It even says on the back that the lyrics were gathered from scraps and snippets, so that's another way of saying "assemblage" rather than main album.
Bravo especially to the Silverman on this one, who I reckon is the driving force of Side C, but in any case shows new chops on some tracks and revives old playing styles here... and I hope was recording this album using the Roland Gaia he played live for this tour. It all has a very digital sound, leaving a little bit of thinness is the vinyl listening experience.
The bonus material adds another element of the off-kilter feeling, as it gives live renditions of songs from a previous album with people no longer in the band for the previous 3 sides. A little odd. One longs for Niels, and Martijn, even though I must say Seconds Late... is a strong album for Erik Drost's guitar presence. My review of the bonus live side is that it is awesome--high fidelity and just a totally tight, spirited moment for the band. I was bummed when it ended.
The band has done another It's Raining in Heaven with this album, which has gotten criticism even by the band over the years. But I love It's Raining in Heaven too.
