Beautiful sounding record. Percussion is full and present, David's voice is up dront and strong. I had read that much of this record, recorded on their last tour, was overdubbed in the studio, but such is the case with many live records, to smooth out the bumps that can happen when performing live, especially music as complex as this. I depart from the other reviewers here that feel the sound is thin and sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. Sound is full and hits hard on a big system. Just goes to show all of us hear things differently. The presence of Masami Tsuchiya on guitar is definite plus, and I highly recommend picking up his record " Rice Music" https://discogs.pelisguay.com/release/4313061-Masami-Tsuchiya-Rice-Music

Edited 4 years agoThis must be the worst live album, ever. It sounds like it's been recorded in a bathroom and half of the tracks are actually studio recorded with crowd cheering dubbed in. The artwork is naff, the inner-gatefold photos would make a far better front cover and compared to the Hammersmith Odeon gig in 1981 (on here as the BBC Transcription Disc - which Sylvian blocked a proper release recently - idiot), this is cow pat and could've been so much better. Only worth listening to whilst watching the live DVD.

I always rather liked Japan, and it is odd now to look back and the TV News reports asking, in the same way as for Boy George, whether David Sylvian was a man or a woman. This is a live album that was recorded on their last tour, 1982, and released in 1983 after the group hand split up. It is sort of semi-live as I think a lot of the parts were re-recorded afterwards and mixed in. Live albums are usually a best of, this one contains three new tracks though, “Oil on Canvas”, “Voices Raised in Welcome, Hands Held in Prayer” and “Temple of Dawn”, all of which are instrumentals and weren’t live at all. My copy is a double in a gate fold sleeve.
