My 1975 copy of this on Impulse ABC Impulse ASD-9265 varies in sound quality quite markedly from track to track. On side 1, for instance, track #1 is very good but tracks #2 and #3 are a bit 'mushy'; the marvellous track #4, Ancient Aethiopia is of significantly better sound quality. I don't know to what extent this reflects the master tapes -- Impulse states in the liner notes that the sound quality is not what might be expected of a 'state-of-the-art' mid-70s recording -- or a failure to be able to clean up the sound when remastering at The Village Recorder in 1973.
Anyway it's great early Chicago period Sun Ra but I am tempted to try a cheap second-hand CD and see how a more recent remastering might compare. -
My pressing sounds amazing! 😻😻😻. I've been tracking down the Impulse/ Sun Ra pressings and this is by far a jewel.
