A hugely underrated album by the Hartnoll brothers. It's not one that instantly draws you in. The sounds may seem slightly strange at first but after the 3rd, 4th, maybe even the 5th listen you begin to appreciate just how well crafted this LP is. Sounds from all kinds of influences are seamlessly woven in to this melodic tapestry (for a prime example, check the Newsround sample on "Spare Parts Express"). The tracks are so well put together and so full of life that you can be totally drawn in to another world listening to it. Stereo is brilliantly realised and vibrant.
The whole album should be taken as a story though. There's no Chime or Belfast on here. It's not about any one track. It's about listening to the thing as a whole and being immersed in the world Orbital have created. Style's probably the only track that doesn't seem to fit the album. It's not a bad track but it seems tacked on compared to the rest.
Give it a chance and you will love it. -
I can't really agree with the other review... Not really a great Orbital album, unfortunately. It has beautiful moments, but I think the tracks are too long and they rely too much on discordant sounds. What makes it even more difficult on the ears is that the discord seems to dominate the beauty. I just listened to it, and I think a few tracks (ie #2) would be far better with some edits made to trim the fat.

For me this LP is one of the all time favourites!
It sounds sophisticated and is brilliantly produced.
A fantastic ride with wicked beats and a whole lotta soul, a beautiful, paranoid, relieving and warm composition that will give you goosebumps!
Listening to it almost 10 years after it's release the message is still valid, just open your heart and mind.
Just pop it in the player and the first 30 seconds will make you want more!
This album truly is a timeless classic! -
I'm going to give this one a neutral rating, seeing that its not good nor is it bad. It's good breakbeat music with nice classic Orbital sampling, but at the same time it feels as if there's no message, no soul, in the music. It's just music for the sake of being music, and its happy tone makes it seem very unserious. But this shouldn't stop you from giving this album a chance, because it still has the production talent we've come to expect from one of the major pioneers of electronic music.
