So, apparently, the US pressings (not sure if it's the case for all 3) have the advantage in of cover (heavier jacket + colored cardboard inners) & vinyl weight (200gr for the US, 180 for the EU) BUT they potentially lose them when it comes to the pressing plants (Rainbo for the US, Optimal for the EU) which is way more critical to the music.
Mastering jobs are also different: Stan Getz II @A+R did the US ones, while Marko Kluge did the EU.
So, my question is simple: is there a clear winner here?
For those who have both pressings, did the infamous Rainbo QC ruined the US press? And, between the two, is there a better master? -
Edited one year agoSo I got the 2022 reissue (I got "Made in " sticker on outside of shrink wrap on back). I also
have the 1994 Yellow Transparent vinyl version. The remastered version sounds has way better balance in SQ. Especially the bass drum and bass sounds way better.
On the 1994 version the bass drum and bass sounds bloated.
Is it just a remaster or did they also alternate the stereomix in some tracks? There's much more 'air',
depth and reverb present in some tracks. Anyhow, they really did a great job remastering this album.
The vinyl is flat and dead quiet. No surface noise at all. -

Edited one year agoThis has just been repressed and is available for well below what people are listing it for on here. I got my copy for around £21 online.

Edited one year agoExcellent reissue, unbeatable sound and master, zero surface noise and great rhythm section sound, highlighting the bass.
It's a delight to be able to listen to "Starla" in this quality on your turntable.
If you find this edition, buy without hesitation. -
i thought i’d receive the 2022 repress when i ordered this in … 2022 …. but i got this one. no hype sticker, same codes as this release. it sounds flawless on my setup. stupidly clean. 5/5
edit: ehh the second LP has occasional hisses and ticks on both sides. relatively minor, but what a bummer anyway. i at least don’t have the issue with “starla” like another person mentioned. -
Regarding the 2022 repress, anyone else experiencing horrid left channel distortion around the 4 minute mark of Starla?

Nice to get a SP title pressed at a decent plant. With exception of MCIS, this is the best vinyl of the reissues. Cut and pressed by optimal, this sounds great and paid under $25. Well worth it!

Owning both the original yellow US 94 pressing and the 2012 reissue EU 2LP it's silly to claim the original is the best sounding pressing out there. Off course the original has it's place in history and it sounds OK. Owning an original is always fun and frankly necessary when you are a collector as I am.
But, comparing delicate songs like the acoustic 'Soothe' and 'Landslide' or complex and heavy tracks like 'Frail and Bedazzled' and 'Pissant' the 2LP reissue is the best. Technically it's a no brainer, the songs have more space in the wax.
Soundwise the reissue sounds really entertaining. Jimmy's drumming can now be heard in full glory, it has the power and the drive which lacks a bit on the original. The reissue has the better instrument seperation, overall just a more entertaining and mesmerizing listen of how great these songs really are.
