Edited one year agoI wish Impulse would just release the Complete 1961 4CD Village Vanguard box set on vinyl. You could have this vinyl set, Live at Village Vanguard, Impressions, The Other Village Vanguard Tapes, and every 1961 Village Vanguard track on the Mastery of John Coltrane compilations on vinyl and you still can’t piece together the equivalent of the whole CD box set. I’ve tried. Even after all of that I still don’t have my favorite version of India on vinyl, for example. As for this set I bought it in a record store when it came out for not much. I don’t really care to debate it’s merits. Whether the quality is up to a reasonable standard or not it’s all the more reason for Impulse to do their own vinyl pressing of the whole box set. I personally don’t like CDs. I’m sure there is enough of a market for at least a limited vinyl run of the whole box whether it need to be 6-8LPs or however large.

I have a copy of this vinyl boxset and I can say in all sincerity, it sounds great! I bought at the time it originally came out and my number is 143 /500 (the number is stamped on the box and not handwritten).
No one is more fussier than me when it comes to bad pressings, so if I had cause for complaint, I would have said something.
The sound is warm and intimate, with Coltrane and Tyner coming out of my left speaker and Elvin Jones on the right.
The vinyl is flat and quiet; and for what I paid for this at the time, I am extremely happy with my copy.
If this reissue was a needle drop or copied from the CD, I am equally impressed with how it all turned out.
Perhaps the releases past 500 were different, I don’t know, but I am seeing people here that are blasting the record label and not actually speaking about this release. I am judging the sound I hear and I am pleased with it.
Thank you
I’m not a Russian troll and have zero connection with Doxy. I am listening on my Nottingham Analogue turntable with Origin Live arm and Ortofon 2M Black cartridge.

DOXY is a public domain label. They release things in crap quality, using whatever publicly available source they can find (CD, cassette, vinyl LP, etc... definitely not ever master tapes).

I can’t believe people pay more than a hundred euros for a Russian needle drop release of half a concert. These labels don’t make limited releases for there quality, booklets or love of the music but only a commercial point of view. Paying no royalties to other record companies or the Coltrane estate makes that even easier.
And common please: this release better than the original Impulse! release on cd? They used the rips of that very release to press their crappy LP’s. How can a CD rip on 140 grams vinyl sound better than the original remaster on CD? Not to speak of the beautiful booklet that comes with the Impulse! Cd release.
Yeah I am a vinylhead too. But in some cases, you’d better get the Cd release. -
Never buy Doxy and never buy Waxtime records if you want quality on vinyl. They are digital prints on vinyl. Not worth the money so just buy the CD.
