Edited 4 years agoComing from a place of despondency towards the UK pop scene, Gorillaz really hit the nail on the head with this debut record. Featured within are a set of incredible tunes that range from spacey dub licks to punk rock jams, and all within the premise that this group are in fact an animated 4 piece! Starting with 'Rehash' it sounds like your standard indie album, only to punch you in the gut by it's second track '5/4', a cheeky guitar led taste of mischief that will be stuck in your head long after listening.
Also featured are the amazing singles 'Tomorrow Comes Today', 'Clint Eastwood', '19-2000' & 'Rock The House' which stand out from the tracklist with their catchy nature (all be it in their original forms and not single versions) and showcase the diversity not just in style but also with the creative minds behind it all. The album comes to a close with the high speed rock tracks 'M1A1' which features a brewing sample from zombie flick 'Day of the Dead' and is shortly followed by the Ed Case remix of 'Clint Eastwood' as a secret track, which breaks from the record's grain to give us a grimy garage sound that was popular at the time.
Also present in this format is a thick booklet featuring amazing artwork by illustrative collaborator Jamie Hewlett which leads it do be a must have for any fans looking to collect the group's back catalogue. A very strong and steadfast debut from a band that beat the odds to become a staple in music culture over the last 20 years. -
As a bolt from the blue in 2001 the first virtual band was a fact. Gorillaz existed the so-called from the animated cartoon characters 2-D, Murdoc, Russell and Noodle. The cartoon characters from the hand of artist Jamie Hewlett formed the external representation of the band into clips and (as holograms) also on stage. In reality there was a great range of pop artists such as Damon Albarn (Blur), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto) and then The Car mater behind the group. Outside of the large amount of attention the good find of a virtual band, Gorillaz, visit drew a lot of attention with their catchy singles and plates of level.
Umbrella term for all of the punk and new wave shot rock music outside the mainstream to develop, parallel to associated subcultures. Includes a wide range of currents, including britpop, gothic, grunge, industrial, lo-fi, noise and post rock. Also new wave itself usually falls under this heading. As a counterpart to ' mainstream ' is alternative or indie (independent = independent) characterized by more artistic and substantive intentions, above commercial intentions and star status. That started with undergroundbands as The Velvet Underground, The Doors and The Stooges who in the sixties started their own, more personal interpretation to give to pop music. Via art rock and Pub rock erupted in 1977 punk and new wave. Not only the energy and street sense, but also the D.I.Y. (do it yourself) think b -
Edited 8 years agoIn my opinion - "Gorillaz" is the best Dark Pop album that i have ever heard! Music to my ears is a understatement! 15 years on & this album still sounds fresh! Pity they sold themselves out & slipped into the commercial melting pot of dilution which some would call "change"!? Shame!

Gorillaz are awesome! Out of all the Top-40 acts of the previous decade (the 2000's), Gorillaz were easily the most progressive and innovative providing a fantastic mix of Indie, Hip-Hop, Dance and Electronica.
This was their first album released in 2001 and hasn't really dated at all. Songs like Clint Eastwood, Rock The House, 19/2000, Tomorrow Comes Today and Latin Simone (with the late Ibrahim Ferrer on vocals) are still top tunes, and shows an eclectic harmony of different music styles from (fictional) musicians from diverse backgrounds.
The UK Album also has a couple of remixes added in too, that consisted of a 2-Step Speed Garage mix of Clint Eastwood and a Fatboy Slim-esque Big Beat remix of 19/2000 by Soulchild, that are worth checking out, but the originals are better in my opinion.
Recommended.
