Edited one month agoFor Whom The Bellman Tolls! My copy has ZERO noise. This pressing sounds ace. Airy but still goes deep… and deeper when needed. Highs and lows are all in there. This generous Black Album cuts through firing A LOT of strength without asking for more volume.
Gear:
Hegel V10 phono preamp
Hegel H120
Hana SL cartridge
Rega P3

If you want this on vinyl but don't want to spend the money for an original, this will be fine.
When you compare this to any of the original 91 pressings (they use US stampers), it sounds like a blanket was thrown over my speakers, and it's not as punchy, loud, heavy, and plenty of bite like the 91 pressings -

Edited one year ago[Edit: The beginning of "Nothing Else Matters", the end of "My Friend of Misery", and the beginning of "The Struggle Within" do have surface noise. Otherwise all my other comments stand.] I'm not an audiophile, but I have to defend this pressing! First of all, the music sounds like I it sounding back in the day (back then I had it on cassette and played it to death). Secondly, my second-hand copy sounds NM -- there are NO imperfections during playback! Almost unheard-of! "Holier Than Thou" hits hard like a hammer. The drums (not Metallica's strong point) on "The Unforgiven" punch like a virtuoso boxer. I could go on. I bought this pressing on a whim while browsing in a record shop, then regretted it as an unnecessary purchase. Now that I'm listening to it, I'm SO happy I got it! Good-Enough Equipment: Rega P1 Plus turntable (new); eltax speakers (second-hand); Technics Stereo Integrated Amplifier (second-hand); glass of Ruppertsberger Pinot Noir...

The sound disappoints me. Too little bass, too much treble, even the s-sound hisses. The vinyl, on the other hand, is clean and pressed very flat...

a pity - lack of dynamics, flat sounding. The pressing flat, no noise - but the mastering is not worth to have in on the vinyl record.

A decent issue. My copy is flat with almost no surface noise. The sound is good, clean, but at some parts the bass is a bit low and what this mastering lacks is dynamics. Still, a good issue. 4 stars.
