Tom Waits – Franks Wild Years

Incredible pressing, the clarity and detail is mind blowing despite the runtime of the album.

Beautiful sound. Not a flashy or showy remaster, just the right amount of tweaking to make it shine. Pressing/packaging is 10/10 too

My copy (goodwill find from long ago) sounds fantastic- clear treble, full bass- a very nice lp. If you can find a clean version-

Mine is snap popple crack even after a VPI wash. Found the same with other Tom Waits recent reissues. My Luck.

This is the standout for me of the remastered "Island trilogy". Kind of a revelation. It's a record I ed as deliberately murky, the ramshackle, coming-at-you-through-a-badly-tuned-radio aesthetic a deliberate decision and a big part of its appeal. My 1987 pressing still sounds that way. But the remastering here is superb: it's sort of like a careful polish of the original that doesn't remove any of the worn-out patina or shine too bright a light into the darker corners, it just gives a gentle clean-up to all the intricate details without highlighting any of them unduly or separating any individual sonic element from the whole of the songs. It was a wonderful record anyway, but this version just takes all the things that were great about it to start with and gives you more direct access to all of them without losing anything in the translation. And, for all that there have been problems with these pressings (my copy of Swordfishtrombones is going back because of a visible and very audible lump at the start of Shore Leave; all three have a few clicks and pops which will probably go with a couple of plays and/or a clean), this one is absolutely fine. It was one of all-time-great LPs to start with, but for me this is the definitive version, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Not entirely flat, but perfect in all other aspects. Vinyl mastering is exemplary, given the fact that there is almost an hour of music packed in just 1LP. I also bought the excellent 192/24 digital file (mostly for headphone listening) but the vinyl edition simply sounds more realistic.
