Edited 18 years agoThis song is worth a comment... a long story, actually:
Ace Of Base tried hard to get attention in Sweden at the start and managed to get some interest in Stockholm and were invited to record at the SweMix Studio. That studio had just been refurbished / modernized, and a "guinea pig" outfit was ideal to try out the new machinery there. They basically were allowed to record a couple of tracks, one being "Wheel Of Fortune". That track wasn't at all something that the Stockholm A&R crowd was interested in, so (in desperation) Ace Of Base sent a cassette of it to Mega in Denmark.
Mega signed Ace Of Base on-the-spot, but "Wheel Of Fortune" didn't really make it on the local charts despite having been release twice!
In the meanwhile in Stockholm... Denniz PoP was THE star DJ / remixer at SweMusic and had a cassette of the tracks recorded there by Ace Of Base. He put it in his car player, and... it stuck! Couldn't be ejected!! He listened to Ace Of Base whenever driving for some time as he was too lazy to get that cassette player fixed - he then called Mega: "I wanna produce this song!"
Back to Copenhagen & Mega: "Wheel Of Fortune" was on its 3rd release and going nowhere, so we readied "All That She Wants" for release. Suddenly, Danish radio stations zoomed in on "Wheel Of Fortune" and propelled it on the singles' sales chart. Next up, a crucial weekly chart with "Wheel Of Fortune" at #2 with "All That She Wants" at #1 - the only time ever an artist had conquered those two top spots in Denmark.
There was a mad rush to get a videoclip done at that point. M. Maurice Hawkesworth was called in to the tune of "invent something, NOW!". He managed to coerce actress Christiane Bjoerg Nielsen into lending out her apartment for the shoot and appearing in it as well, and the whole thing was shot during an afternoon with some afterhours scenes at a nearby Copenhagen bar.
Next chapter: "All That She Wants" and Ace Of Base had a huge hit in Europe through PolyGram and elsewhere through licenses - but what about the US? PolyGram had back then an option for the US and the rest of the American Continent, but Mega got a very terse telex message (the email of back then) telling us "this will NEVER work in the US!". This is where the "stuck car cassette" syndrome got back into action:
Out of the clear blue sky, Clive Davis calls. He says "I'm cruising in the Mediterranean and all I hear on the radio is that Ace Of Base song... is it available for the US???"
The rest is chart history, but here we go with some tech info:
Ace Of Base contributed with a lot of analog synths, using a Roland's Juno-106 / TR-808, TR-909, Sequencial Circuits Prophet V and lots of Akai S-1000KB. The horn riff is done with a Casio MIDI horn, nearly a toy rather than a pro synth! Denniz did TR-909 samples and detuned them, to make a darker / lower-pitched sound on the rhythm bits. This sound was much imitated, BTW.
